Preschool

Preschool Program

(Children ages 2 1/2 - 3 1/2)

We provide a setting where the parent and child are interacting together with others and the parent has the opportunity to observe how their child’s confidence and self esteem blossoms.

Each child is given freedom to experience school at his own pace. We are committed to providing an opportunity for children to gain positive, new experiences in a loving, nurturing environment.

The primary goals of our Preschool program are as follows:

Stimulate children through a theme based curriculum.

Provide hands on learning.

Expand language, communication, and listening skills.

Independence and confidence are encouraged.

Learn to play, interact and resolve conflicts with peers.

Development of fine motor skills.

Development of gross motor skills.

Our program is divided into three primary categories:

Creative time, which provides opportunities to choose various theme related crafts, play with toys, build and create with tools and blocks, participate in water and sand play, work on a puzzle, computer or relax with a book.

Active time, includes a trampoline, tunnels, riding toys, a castle with dress up clothes and fire truck. When weather permits, the children go to our well equipped, fenced outdoor playground.

Circle time offers music, stories, games and drama; each illustrating and expressing the theme of the month. From time to time, excursions are planned.

JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN

What do children learn in Junior Kindergarten at Applewood?

In addition to self-esteem, physical confidence through exercise and manipulation, the following areas of formal learning are an integral part of the curriculum:

English:

A new letter of the alphabet each week

The Jolly Phonics sign(s) and words which use that sound, at the beginning or inside a word

A worksheet to be completed and sent home (printing)

Letter blends-once the alphabet has been completed

Word recognition and phonetic spelling

The concept of a sentence

Numbers (recognition to 31)

Worksheets encompassing 1-20

Verbal counting 1-31

The concepts of addition and subtraction

The days of the week

The months of the year, seasons, and "two thousand and seven!"

Themes developed to broaden a child's knowledge of the world, his or her part in it, and the vocabulary to tell you what has been discovered. All themes are supported by related resources; both cognitive and sensory.

Home reading program

French (after Winter Break)

Numbers-using the calendar and posted numbers of the week, as well as les jours et les mois

Greetings and general polite vocabulary

Phraseology commonly used in French Immersion programs (Grade 1)

Why do we introduce French into our curriculum? Children best absorb second languages at an early age. Some children will excel and others will be content to have fun with Canada's other official language. Those children who excel are candidates for the enrichment of French Immersion offered by Peel District School Board and other Boards of Education. The child's response to this first experience will help parents with later decisions regarding school selection.

Teacher's Bios

Karyn Hale

Karyn is the Supervisor at Applewood Co-Operative Preschool. Karyn also teaches the Junior and Senior Kindergarten program. Karyn graduated from Sheridan College Early Childhood Education program in 1998 she is also a member in good standing with the College of Early Childhood Education. She has been involved with Co-Operative Preschools as both a parent and a teacher since 2001. Karyn has been Supervisor/Teacher at Applewood since 2007.

Anita Bratsberg

Anita is a graduate of the Early Childhood Education program from Sheridan College. She began her career with the Children’s Services Division of the Region of Peel. When her three children were preschoolers, she enrolled them at Applewood. During the seven years that she was involved in the program, she held positions in various committees, as well as Membership Chair, President, Past President and Liaison Officer. Anita made herself available to supply teach. Anita started teaching at Applewood Co-operative in September 2001 as the Junior Room Teacher.

WENDY KOZAK

Wendy is our Teaching Assistant. She is a graduate of Humber College. Wendy started teaching at Applewood in September 2002, before becoming a T.A. Wendy was also an involved parent at the school for 4 years. Wendy also works with special needs children in the Peel District School Board.
